The secrets and purposes of the visit of the "Sharif brothers" to Saudi Arabia

From Riyadh - Ghanim Al-Mutairi

The visit of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his brother, the prime minister of Punjab province Shahbaz Sharif , to Saudi Arabia, raised several questions about the purposes and secrets of this visit.

DAWN newspaper reported in this context a report by the Pakistani writer and journalist Zaid Hussein, in which Hussein said that the visit of the Sharif brothers to the Kingdom, revealed the great role played by Saudi Arabia in Pakistan.

The Pakistani writer added that the meeting held by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with the Sharif brothers is likely to have a very significant impact on the political track of the Sharif family in particular and also Pakistan.

On the sidelines of the visit, Zaid Hussein pointed out that there is strong speculation about the Saudi pressure on Nawaz Sharif to step down and hand over the party leadership to his younger brother and thus ensure the unity of the ruling party.

However, it is not certain that Saudi efforts to secure the stability of the ruling party and the stability of Pakistan has succeeded in persuading the former Pakistani prime minister to abandon his intransigence and move away from the ruling party and the political process in Pakistan.

Although it is difficult to imagine Nawaz Sharif away from the political scene, his hardline stance may have serious consequences for his party and the future of his ruling family's policy, according to the Pakistani writer and journalist.

The two leaders were recalled to the kingdom because of Saudi concerns about growing political instability in Pakistan that’s considered one of the kingdom's most important allies in the region, Zahid Hussein said.

The series of meetings with Prince Mohammed bin Salman also indicate the great role played by the Crown Prince in the attempts to push towards stability in the ruling party and in Pakistan in general, and the importance that Saudi Arabia attaches to one of its most important allies.

The writer concludes that although attempts to remove Nawaz Sharif from the political scene may not be easy, developments in the events confirm that one can not underestimate the Saudi factor in Pakistani politics, especially the impact of the Kingdom on the Sharif family.
